House Of Reps Raises Alarm Over $326m Paid To Tompolo

The House of Reps ad-hoc Committee investigating the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, CVFF, has queried the management of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA, over $326million it paid to Global West Specialist Vessels Limited, a company purportedly owned by ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo.

The House Committee was set up to ascertain how much has accrued into the CVFF, including the interest, as well as how much the Fund disbursed and to whom it gave the money. It also demanded to know why such huge amount of payment was made to Tompolo's company secretly.

During the investigation, a member of the Committee, Dr Adejare Samuel Babatunde, raised an alarm at the amount of money paid to one single company, and demanded that a detailed bank statement of account of the CVFF be forwarded to the committee immediately.

nPDP In Fresh Battle With Old PDP; Lambasts Tukur, Others

The Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is amused by the news of the setting up of a Disciplinary Committee by the faction of PDP led by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

“By reviving the so called disciplinary committee at a time when the Party Leader, His Excellency, President Goodluck Jonathan, is busy holding peace meetings with the Baraje-led PDP shows that he is working at cross purposes with Mr. President. To call a spade a spade, it is tantamount to anti-party activities and exposes Tukur’s hypocrisy and vindicates our stand that he is an obstacle to peace in our great party”. 

The faction in a statement signed and issued by its spokesperson Mr. Eze Chukwuemeka Eze noted that the purpose of the said disciplinary committee led by Alhaji Umaru Dikko was to continue the witch-hunting of the progressive PDP members led by Alhaji Baraje, then there would be no need for further evidence that Tukur and his illegal National Working Committee (NWC) are indeed not ready for peace.

“If indeed a disciplinary committee has been set up by Tukur, we make bold to say that he should be the first with his illegal NWC members to appear before it for usurping the office of the National Chairman of our party even when he is not legally a member of the party as he did not revalidate his membership of the party during the 2011 revalidation exercise.

“We commend our brother, Chief Olisa Metuh, the former National Publicity Secretary of our party, on his theory of institutional memory loss. Ironically, Metuh was referring to himself as he succeeded in exposing his ignorance about the party he assumes to be speaking for. For him to refer the Baraje-led PDP as people who suffer from institutional memory loss indicates that he needs to visit a mental health specialist for proper evaluation. How can any sound member of PDP describe a party that still has Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of the Federal Republic, as a member as not knowing the history and records of the party?

"For the record, Atiku Abubakar apart from being a principal member of the PDP also recruited both Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Alh. Gambo Jimeta, Senator Silas Zwingina and Chief Joel Madaki, among others, to the party in 1988 through Chief Nat Yaduma. Metuh should properly research into the records of people in the Baraje-led PDP before trying to deceive Nigerians with his lies arising from institutional memory loss. Maybe Metuh may not even know that it was Atiku Abubakar that rented and paid for the present National Secretariat of PDP for three years and paid the working staff salaries for three years.

ASUU Strike: More Than 100 Days After…

Tuesday last week marked exactly 100 days that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began an indefinite strike that has shut down all the public universities in our dear country, Nigeria.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no headway in the negotiations to resolve the crisis, going by the rhetoric of the zonal coordinator, Benin zone of ASUU, Dr. Ighalo Sunny. While noting that the union appreciates the interest shown by various stakeholders in the crisis, he said, rather ominously:

“But that will not stop us from finding lasting solution to the decay in our education sector. So, even if it takes us another 10 years, we will remain at home until the right thing is done.”

Instructively, the Federal Government believes it has already done enough to make ASUU call off its strike. In the course of his media chat on the eve of the country’s 53rd Independence anniversary two weeks ago, President Goodluck Jonathan indeed alleged that politics had crept into ASUU’s industrial action.

The President noted that he does not control the resources of the states and wondered why lecturers in state universities are also on strike over a matter that had to do with demands on the federal government.

While there may be no statistical measure of the cumulative damage done to the system in the course of the current ASUU strike that is now in its fourth month, it is evident that education, the bedrock of any society, has become a huge joke in our country. Incessant industrial actions have combined with inadequate attention to damage, almost beyond repairs, our institutions of higher learning.

Strike actions are sometimes justified by the fact that government officials, both at state and federal levels, have acquired a reputation for responding to issues only when they have assumed crisis proportions.

The present ASUU strike, for instance, shows no marked shift from tradition. The union and the government agreed on certain terms by arbitration, through the Gamaliel Onosode Panel, as far back as 2009. One of the major demands of the university teachers, besides the issue of emoluments, was the need for increased sectoral allocation to education in the annual budget to meet the minimum standard as enunciated by UNESCO.

17 Fake NYSC Members Arrested: 9 Males, 8 Females

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested total of Seventeen fake members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

They were rounded up and arrested at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, on Thursday evening while they were posing and taking pictures outside the camp during the passing-out ceremony.

The ICPC, in a statement, said its operatives stormed the camp based on intelligence reports and arrested the suspects comprising eight females and nine males.

It said preliminary investigation revealed that 15 of the suspects claimed to have enrolled in degree courses run by consultancy services in the University of Calabar (6), University of Jos (6), Ebonyi State University (1), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (1) and Crown Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti (1).
